This Old Couch


This old couch, has seen better days. Okay so maybe the lyrics actually refer to a house but I couldn't get this Doc Walker song out of my head after titling this post. 
Our old couches have seen better days for sure, but now they're living the dream as the best play station in our house. Most parents would agree that parenting is messy. My house is in no way pristine, tidy or always clean - I have a two year old tornado - this makes old, knock around items invaluable. In our loft we have two old sofas, these sofas are the best and certainly some of my favourite items in our house.  We love to play outdoors but there are many times that we play indoors - when my babiest baby is napping, when the wind won't listen to us and won't stop, when we are preparing a meal - and our old couches are the designated jumping area. Who doesn't love jumping around? Or off? Or onto? My son is also allowed to climb all over the old couches - sure he falls off of them from time to time, but falling is just part of life. We throw the cushions on the floor to make a comfy landing pad and the chaos ensues. Old couches are also great for fort-making. One old sheet and some displaced couch cushions equals an awesome fort. 



I know it might sound crazy to encourage jumping on the couch, or climbing on the couch, but there is a method to my madness. Physical Literacy is so important for humans, especially children! Not only is it significant for physical activity and sport development, it is beneficial for mental and psychological health, academics and social skills, among others! I love to encourage my son to challenge himself physically, to be wild and free and to develop his fundamental movement skills. I am striving to raise healthy, confident and active children so encouraging this type of play is instrumental in my pursuit! It's not rocket science or overly organized activities - it's back to basics. 
Couch climbing and jumping is good old fashioned fun. My toddler has a blast, my baby thinks it's hilarious to watch and believe it or not I have a great time. There is nothing like playing together to pass the hours that can sometimes feel long.

All too often I hear people complaining about the police. I hear them hating on them, cursing them and making fun of them. I know that not everyone does this but unfortunately it happens a lot. Sleepy Stets

 I found an old playlist the other day, "Sleepy Stets" it's called. I remember making it, it was going to be what I would play while my baby fell asleep at night and during his naps. It's a beautiful playlist, sweet country songs, Jack Johnson, Ben Harper and of course, Iz.  I couldn't help but laugh when I reminisced on the making of this playlist. Little did I know I was going to be blessed with a baby who defied all baby-sleep rules and regulations. A baby who went shot for shot with the best of them when it came to sleep. My Stetson.  Today is his first day of fulltime dayhome. It's a weird day. I've spent the last 20 months with this little person attached to me, first growing inside me for nine months and then always with me for the next eleven.  In two weeks my maternity leave (God bless Canada and our maternity leave benefits) will come to an end. One word as a theme for the year.  D E V O T I O N To my faith - may it continue to grow and blaze, setting my heart on fire.  To my husband - my bestfriend, my partner, may we continue to love and respect each other with understanding.  To my son - may you continue to teach me things about life, and myself, that I have been so oblivious to.  To myself - may you hold strong to who you are, take time for yourself, love yourself and run.
